Year after year I keep repeating that Mexico is great plan B. Why? Because it is possible to obtain residency and keep it active with minimal time on the ground, and after 5 years of legal residency in Mexico, one can apply for citizenship anytime as long as one has spent 18 out of the prior 24 months in Mexico.

In essence, you work towards getting a call option on being able to apply for citizenship within two years of deciding to do so.

But it keeps getting tougher year after year. There used to be a very easy regularization program which we helped quite a few of our clients with, but this program got cancelled in March.

Now, to obtain residency in Mexico you must first apply at the Mexican embassy or consulate OR give birth in Mexico.

There are many options:
– By demonstrating enough income over the past 6 months
– By demonstrating enough savings over the past 12 months
– By buying real estate in your own name or through a Mexican corporation
– Direct permanent residency for retirees

as well as the usual options such as marriage and work permit.

In this video with my immigration agent Sergei we discuss these programs in detail as well as the minimum thresholds.

However the easiest pathway remains giving birth in Mexico. I wrote a whole report with video case study on giving birth in Mexico.

So if you are thinking of getting pregnant in the next year or so, or if you are planning on impregnating someone, make sure to negotiate a “birth in Mexico” clause ahead of time 🙂.

For North Americans Mexico is a no-brainer right around the corner.

For Europeans Mexico can lead to a North American citizenship. A little-known fact is that Mexican citizenship gives the same right to work in the US as Canadians have (TN NAFTA Professionals). So if you want your children to later on have relatively easy access to the US labour market on top of the European one, Mexico is a great option.

Mexicans also have easy access to the Canadian labour market through the same mechanism.
