This is a robust citizenship by descent that barely ever gets discussed online. Historically it was because Ukraine did not officially recognize dual citizenship. It now does recognize and permit it for citizens of most Western countries including Canada, the U.S. and most European countries.
Importantly, though the process requires a trip to Ukraine, it does not lead to male applicants being conscripted on site. You gather all the paperwork beforehand, and just go to Ukraine for a very basic language test.
You will then be granted citizenship when you are back overseas and can then claim your passport at a nearby embassy.
A Ukrainian passport is a great travel document with visa-free access to the EU, to Russia (with a complimentary security screening), and with refugee rights and benefits in dozens of countries across the world. Importantly, it easily goes down the generations. This is a priceless gift to your children and future grandchildren.
We discuss how to obtain Ukrainian Citizenship by Descent with my lawyer Taras.
Ukraine is Europe’s second largest country after Russia
I went back to Ukraine a few weeks ago in May/June. The country is vast. Not everywhere is a war zone. You shouldn’t be worried about going to cities, such as Uzhgorod near Hungary, for immigration matters.
