Check your family tree.
We’ve helped a number of our private clients with this very process. They wanted to acquire a second citizenship by investment, but when digging into their family tree we discovered they were eligible for a free citizenship by descent. One of their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were born overseas and our clients were fortunate enough that it was in a jurisdiction which grants citizenship to descendants.
Many countries in Europe and Latin America have such programs in place.
And now Africa is getting on board
Africa is changing fast, and emigration from the continent is a reality that some countries are starting to actually appreciate rather than complain about. Smart policymakers are now luring talent back to the continent or at least creating stronger links with their diaspora in order to drive foreign direct investment “back home.”
Countries like Sierra Leone offer remote fast-track citizenship at a large discount for people of African descent.
And Kenya, a country where I have invested quite a bit, has finally recognized dual citizenship, thus making millions of Kenyans overseas eligible to get regain their citizenship in case they were forced to renounce it in order to get a Western passport. This process can go back a few generations.
We discuss this Kenyan citizenship by descent process together with Safina and her colleague Mr. Muraya.
Expect more Africa content
I understand that most “offshore-type people” are only interested in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and “Dubai.” Africa rarely ever gets mentioned, and when it does it’s often in a negative light or based on AI summaries.
I spent most of my twenties working in Southern and West Africa. I made my first real estate investments on the continent over ten years ago. I lived and worked there. I see the potential of the continent, and I have been a witness to the improvement in many (but not all) countries. I am also comfortable with the continent’s development process which experiences high volatility—two steps forward, one step back.
