El Salvador continues reforming their economy and society. Some reforms are promising and some less promising.
But the latest immigration reforms are quite intriguing.
1. Residency can now work as a plan B
Before, you had to spend more than seven to nine months per year in El Salvador to be able to renew your temporary residency. This has changed. The minimum physical presence is now set at three months. So effectively you can come down to El Salvador during the winter, enjoy the beach or highlands and return home while still maintaining your residency and working towards permanent residency.
2. Citizenship is easy to get but easy to lose
After enough time as a permanent resident, El Salvador will grant you citizenship relatively easily. But, and this is a big but, if you leave the country for more than two years in a row as a naturalized citizen, you lose your citizenship.
So it’s a bit like Panama, where you can lose your permanent residency if you don’t step foot in the country every two years, but here this applies to citizenship.
It’s effectively a very fragile citizenship, but now easier to obtain as well.
We discuss these matters in detail together with my Salvadoran lawyer Rodrigo.

If you feel this is a bit much for a CBI, we certainly won’t blame you as we also feel this way. But please do reach out for a free CBI consulting call.
