I often see Uruguay being pitched by conservative voices as some sort of great Plan B away from the “decaying West” .
I feel this is misleading.
I personally believe Uruguay is much more appropriate for liberals, some types of libertarians, and apolitical people.
For liberals Uruguay offers:
– Stability
– Women’s rights
– Gay rights
– Consensus driven politics
– Attractive tax incentives
– Open drug policies
For Conservatives Uruguay offers:
– The illusion of living in some type of agrarian society
– Attractive tax incentives
– Gun rights
– Immigration authorities that simply decline immigration applications from countries that they don’t deem worthy enough (most of the world apart from Western countries and developed Asian countries)
But conservatives won’t like a lot of the points liberals enjoy, and that are very much present in everyday life in Uruguay.
In many ways, it’s a decent place for Libertarians who are flexible with their ideology.
But trying to pitch Uruguay as a great Plan B for conservatives? Absolutely not.
1. The values don’t align
2. Uruguay is a Plan A, not a Plan B, due to the amount of time one must spend on the ground to obtain residency.
Right now a lot of Americans are leaving the US due to Trump. I feel Uruguay is a great option for this target demographic.
We discuss these insights together with my Uruguay immigration agent Macarena.

If you are rather conservative and want a Plan B in the Southern Cone, Paraguay residency is a much more appropriate choice.
